CERN is joining ECTP
ECTP has the pleasure to welcome CERN, the European Council for Nuclear Research (in French: Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire), as new applicant member.
CERN's mission is to perform world-class research in fundamental physics. It does so by providing a unique range of particle accelerator facilities that enable research at the forefront of human knowledge, in an environmentally responsible and sustainable way. In doing so, CERN also helps to create new approaches and technological innovations that may have direct societal impacts across many academic fields and industrial sectors.
In February 2023, CERN started a large new initiative called 'CERN's Green Village'. With this initiative CERN offers its campus (667 buildings, 54km roads, 64km tunnels, 111ha of green spaces) as a testbed or demonstration site for early-stage sustainable solutions by research consortia or individual companies. Focus is on sustainable construction methods, pollution & waste prevention in construction, big data analysis in construction, environmental monitoring, light and noise abatement, smart energy and green mobility. CERN is also active in district heating, for example. CERN continuously renovates, builds and modifies the buildings, warehouses and roads on its territory.
CERN maintains its own rules and regulations on everything related to its territory, so it can take quick decisions which avoids lengthy permitting procedures. lt is also a neutral location for running demonstrations and it has a huge public visibility to showcase collaborative project results. CERN preferably works with project consortia and - if requested - can also lead collaborative projects.
